Feature Film: Breaking Away

Feature Film: Breaking Away In-Person

Rivalries can be fun. They can also be heartbreaking, thought-provoking, and absurd. What if your heroes were your rivals? Or your mother? Or a missionary? Or what if you were in a competition with yourself? Enjoy a variety of uncommon rivalries on Tuesdays at 7 p.m.

On January 6, see Breaking Away (1979), starring Dennis Christopher, Dennis Quaid, and Daniel Stern. Working-class teens Mike, Cyril, and Moocher despise the wealthy Indiana University students in their town while their pal Dave, a skilled cyclist, idolizes the Italian racing team.

On January 13, watch Ordinary People (1980), starring Donald Sutherland, Mary Tyler Moore, and Timothy Hutton. High school student Conrad Jarrett, struggles to recover without his mother’s support after his older brother accidentally dies and Conrad reacts by trying to kill himself.

On January 20, come for Chariots of Fire (1981), starring Ben Cross, Ian Charleson, and Alice Krige. Gifted British runners Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell wrestle with privilege, bigotry, and honoring god and country as they compete in the 1924 Paris Olympics.

One January 27, enjoy Crossing Delancey (1988), starring Amy Irving, Peter Riegert, and Jeroen Krabbé. Single Manhattan bookstore employee Isabelle Grossman is introduced to a local pickle vendor when her grandmother hires a Jewish matchmaker to find a husband for her grandaughter.

Uncommon Rivalries: A Film Series runs on January 6, 13, 20 & 27.
